Margaret Evelyn Jones

Myrtle Beach, SC Margaret Evelyn Jones, passed away Thursday, January 13, 2011 at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, Myrtle Beach. Margaret was born in Oswego, NY and was the daughter of the late Guy W. and Mary Katherine Quigley Jones. She was also predeceased by her two brothers, Robert W. and Fred G. Jones and a close friend, Jane McCarthy, who died in 2002. A graduate of the Oswego State Teachers College (now SUNY Oswego), Margaret began teaching in the elementary grades in Oswego and Herkimer, NY, then won a position in the highly rated Manhasset School District in Manhasset, Long Island, the town from her mother hailed. She taught kindergarten there in both the Plandome and Shelter Rock Schools for over 25 years. She held a Masters Degree in Education from St. Lawrence University. She was a gifted, knowledgeable teacher of the young, devoted to starting them on a successful life’s path. During her long life she also studied at UCLA. In addition to Oswego and Herkimer, she lived in Baldwin, Port Washington and Oneonta, NY and, of course, in Myrtle Beach, SC Margaret was a long time member of the Pine Lakes Golf Club and also of Myrtlewood. She only gave the game up in the last year of her life. She was a devoted and generous member of the St. Andrew’s community who first began attending Mass there when services were held in a private home. She was a proud member of that second generation of American women who learned during a second world war the value of independence and self-sufficiency. She lived that stalwart life to the end of her days. Surviving are a goddaughter, Christine DeWitt of Fairport, NY and the family of Colonel Thomas W. Otto, Jr. of Springfield, VA. Mass of Christian burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 21, 2011 at St. Andrew Catholic Church of Myrtle Beach. Burial will take place next to her parents in the Jones family plot in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Oswego, NY. The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 20, 2011 from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at McMillan-Small Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society. An online guest register is available at McMillan-Small Funeral Home of Myrtle Beach and Morris Funeral Home of Morris, NY are serving the family.

Miss Jones was my kindergarten teacher at Plandome Road School in Manhasset from 1957-58. I remember her fondly as a kind and wonderful teacher. My condolences to all her family and friends.

We haveknown Margaret a long time...playing cards and most of all playing golf at O.C.C. Our visits to see her and Jane in Myrtle Beach... and many other outing we had. She was a very strong and caring woman..She loved our grandchildren with who she swam with every summer in Oneonta. We will all miss in peace Margaret. Your Friends Emmy & Ted

We will remember Margaret as a strong-willed, caring woman. It was a pleasure to know her and spend holidays with her in the welcoming Otto home. May she rest in peace, and may God comfort the family and friends who are mourning her loss. We are thankful to have known her.

To my friend Ms. Margaret- I so enjoyed our time together and especially when we went out Christmas Shopping for your family!
