We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Venessa O’Brien on June 19, 2024. She was a remarkable woman who lived a life full of love, accomplishment, and unwavering grace. Venessa was born in 1919, and over the course of her 105 years, she touched the lives of many through her kindness, generosity, and steadfast spirit.
Although she chose never to marry or have children, Venessa was deeply committed to her family, especially to her nieces and nephew and their children and grand children.
Venessa was a trailblazer in her career, having joined General Electric after graduating from Bay Path Institute in 1938, during a time when few women were given the opportunity to work professionally, especially while remaining single. Starting as a secretary in GE’s promotions area, she rose through the ranks to become the first female Outside Sales Engineer. Venessa opened doors for women at a time when such opportunities were scarce, and her influence continues to inspire. Her 44 years of devoted service at GE exemplified her determination and strength, paving the way for the generations of women who followed.
Venessa was also passionate about travel. Throughout her retirement she immersed herself in new cultures, always finding joy in the world around her. Her love of exploring the world lead her to climb the Great Wall of China at 93, a feat that continues to amaze those who hear of it.
Venessa’s contributions to her alma mater, Bay Path College, were profound. She was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999 for her significant contributions of time, talent, and compassion. A mentor and a friend, Venessa guided many young students to go beyond their comfort zones and make a meaningful impact in their lives and communities. She was a Lifetime Member of both the Millennium Society and the Legacy Society, always giving back to the institutions and people who meant so much to her.
Her faith was another important pillar of her life. Venessa held leadership roles at Old First Church and was a dedicated member of her local senior center, where she generously gave her time and energy. As her church recently discussed the Fruits of the Spirit, it was clear to everyone who knew her that Venessa embodied these virtues: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
Venessa’s life was truly a legacy of love, strength, and resilience. She was a woman of extraordinary kindness who shone brightly wherever she went. As we reflect on her life and accomplishments, we are grateful for the time we had with her and the impact she made. We will always remember Venessa for her support, her philanthropy, and her commitment to others.
She was, simply put, a treasure. To know her was to love her.
Venessa was predeceased by her brother Oric O’Brien of Lincoln Maine, sister, Chesla O’Brien of Leominster Massachusetts. She is survived by Nephew Kevin O’Brien of Lakeville, Maine, Niece, Valerie Whittier of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and Darcy Campbell of Orono, Maine and their spouses, children and grandchildren.
