Ida Ruth Galloway Smith entered her heavenly home on June 17, 2026. Born on
October 13, 1936, in Southport, NC, Ruth was the daughter of the late Marion Leon
Galloway and Ruth Heath Galloway. She was preceded in death by her brother, Robert
Leon Galloway; her great-grandson, Cooper Michael Smith of Durham, NC; and a very
special friend, Mettie Monroe of Ash, NC.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of North Myrtle Beach, SC, where she
taught Sunday School for many years and participated in other volunteer activities.
Ruth graduated from Shallotte High School in 1953. She attended Greensboro
College and graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1957. She taught at the
former Myrtle Heights School in Myrtle Beach, SC, Waccamaw School in Brunswick,
NC, and for 25 years at Ocean Drive Elementary in North Myrtle Beach, SC. Ruth loved
her work and all the students and colleagues she met through the years. She shared
many humorous stories about things that happened during her teaching career.
She was an avid student of Biblical prophecy. Her interests included
reading, gardening, and sports. She was also a proud member of the Theodosia Burr
Chapter of The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). She cherished the
wonderful days spent on the beach with friends from near and far and their families.
In earlier years, she was active in civic activities. In the later years of her life,
health challenges brought significant changes, but through it all, she remained grateful
for the many blessings in her life.
Her life was devoted to her faith and family. She believed in a simple life and
found joy in spending time with her grandchildren, shopping, and trying to teach life’s
lessons.
Cherishing her memory are her husband of 68 years, Daniel R. Smith;
their three children, Dawn, Lynne (companion Steve Bruder), and Daniel R. Smith II
(Missy), all of North Myrtle Beach; seven grandchildren, Valerie (Ryan) of Atlanta, GA,
Tristan, Daniel (Nicky) of Durham, NC, Kyle (Hunter), Drew (McKenzie), Chance
(Olivia), and Zane; honorary granddaughter, Stephanie Diehl; 10 great-grandchildren,
with one on the way; her sister, Marion Snipes (Conway) of Fort Worth, TX; and her
