Ricky Lee "Rick" Matthews

Ricky Lee ("Rick") Matthews, 73, of North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, passed away peacefully at his home on June 11, 2026.

Born on January 26, 1953, in Northampton County, Virginia, Rick was the son of the late Jesse A. Matthews and Estelle Ross Matthews.

Rick was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. For more than 30 years, he shared a loving marriage with his wife, Gwen Smith Matthews. Together they built a life centered on family, friendship, and creating lasting memories.

For 41 years, Rick worked in the railroad industry, spending his career with Penn Central, Amtrak, and Norfolk Southern Railway. He took great pride in his work and built lasting friendships throughout his years on the railroad. His dedication, dependability, and strong work ethic earned the respect of coworkers and friends alike.

Outside of work, Rick was passionate about golf. Whether on the course or sharing stories afterward, he cherished the time spent playing with his buddies and enjoyed the friendships golf brought into his life. He was also an avid animal lover who held a special place in his heart for his many family pets, especially his beloved Jack Russell Terrier, “Stumpy.”

Rick will be remembered for his sense of humor, loyalty to family and friends, and the love he freely shared with those around him.

He is survived by his loving wife, Gwen Smith Matthews; his son and daughter-in-law, Jason and Katie Matthews of Boone, North Carolina; his grandchildren, Hank Matthews and Mae Matthews of Boone, North Carolina; and his sister, Barbara Thomas of Eastville, Virginia.

In addition to his parents, Rick was preceded in death by his brother, William Duke Matthews, and his beloved Jack Russell Terrier, Stumpy.

The family will hold a Celebration of Life service at a later date.

Rick's love for his family, his friends, his dogs, and the game of golf will be remembered and cherished always.
