A bright light was extinguished as Pushpa Rani Saxena passed away early Saturday morning at the tender age of 88. She was born in Mainpuri, India as the 6th of 7 children. She was the daughter of Agoon Lal and Radha Rani Saxena. She was predeceased by her parents and 5 of her 6 siblings, and sadly the last sibling, her older brother, also passed away this past weekend. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Subhash Chandra Saxena, her daughter Anita Saxena Ginski, her son Anil Kumar Saxena, and her many nieces and nephews.
She earned her B.A. in Economics from Agra University in 1957 and her M.A. in Economics from Atlanta University in 1962. She married in July 1959 and immigrated to USA in 1960. She was a devoted and loving daughter, sister, aunt, wife, and mother, as she was very fond of her children and her nieces and nephews. Her nieces and nephews thought of her as their favorite babysitter before she married and left her home. Later, as she raised her own children, she helped them vigorously in their many extracurricular activities.
She was an ardent supporter of Coastal Carolina University, as her husband is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus, and both children are CCU alumni. She attended many CCU functions and was almost always complimented on her unique outfits. She volunteered at Chapin Memorial Library and was an active member of the Grand Strand Senior Center. She had many hobbies over the years, including playing bridge, sewing, bowling, Scrabble, knitting, word puzzles, crocheting, gardening, dancing (Kathak-style), and poetry. She enjoyed her poetry so much that she was part of a Poetry Club and even published a few poems.
Her father instilled many of his values in her and he was a huge admirer of Mahatma Gandhi. As a result, she shared many of their passions for nonviolence, charity, freedom, civil/equal rights, free speech, and democracy. She was active in many charitable causes, including the Annual Community Christmas Dinner. She became a naturalized citizen in 1995 and worked as an election poll worker for over 20 years. She delighted in her patriotic duties, as many voters in her precinct took comfort in seeing her as they cast their ballots.
A small private ceremony was held on Monday morning and a Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, November 19th, 2024, between 4:00 PM-6:00 PM at the Grand Strand Senior Center (address listed below).
In Lieu of flowers, the family request donations made in her memory to American Heart Association, or New Directions.
