Phyllis Jordan Marlette, 69, entered eternal rest and rejoicing in the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Wednesday, December 1, 2021. She took her last breath at her home in Myrtle Beach, SC after a recent battle with MMMT, an aggressive form of uterine cancer. Phyllis was well cared for and comforted in death by her adoring husband, David; beloved son, Jonathan; and faithful sister, Beverly; as well as Caris Hospice.
“Phyllis Ann” was born on May 31, 1952 in Raleigh, NC. She was the firstborn daughter of the late V.H. Jordan Jr. and Junnie L. Dudley Jordan. Her early years were enriched by family (especially cousins) and her childhood church, Highland Baptist of Raleigh. Phyllis was a graduate of Garner Senior High School and attended Guilford College where she met her loving husband, David Marlette. Her professional career began as an Admin. Assistant at UNCG. Next, having an abundant love for all things music, she and David set out on an adventure with the musical show group, Bare Fax. Other professional years were spent as a Legal Assistant to the late Fred Toms and partnering with her husband in Capital Electronics, which was established by her father. Her natural love for children and music allowed her a season as the Children’s Music Director at the First Baptist Day School of Cary, NC. Most of her years were spent in benevolent service.
Phyllis was a faithful disciple of the Lord and enjoyed 35 years of fellowship at First United Methodist Church of Cary, NC. Special groups there included Harmony Circle, Unity Class, Chapel Singers of FUMCC, Chancel Choir, Carillon Ringers and anything involving children, especially directing children’s music at the Methodist Children’s Center. Since moving to Myrtle Beach in 2014, she enjoyed additional fellowship at FUMC of Myrtle Beach where she was a member of the hand bell choir, Lautrelle Merchant Circle, among other groups. In the Myrtle Beach community, Helping Hand, Impact Ministries (J1 students), and Hope House, were dear to her heart and she served regularly and cheerfully. Phyllis was a faithful servant in all areas of ministry! She will be remembered for her vibrant smile, attention to detail and order, and her servants heart.
Phyllis is survived by her adoring husband of 48 years, David Marlette; her cherished son, Jonathan Marlette; sister Beverly J. Guthrie (Wayne); Brother in law William R. “Bill” Marlette (Donna) of Graham, NC; niece Leigh Ann Collins (Teak) of Myrtle Beach; niece Sherri Spraggins (Derrick); nephew Shaun Marlette (Heather); niece Kristy Gilliam (Paul) of Burlington, NC. Her surviving great nieces and nephews also brought her so much joy: Caden Collins, Hayley Spraggins, Abbey Marlette, and Aiden Gilliam.
The Celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 12, 2021 at First United Methodist Church of Cary, NC with visitation to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: FUMC of Cary or FUMC of Myrtle Beach to be tagged for Handbells or Missions, Helping Hand of Myrtle Beach, or Hope House of Myrtle Beach.
