Nancy was born in Passaic, NJ to the late Richard and Josephine Layer, ( Dick and JoJo co-owner’s of
Sloppy Joe’s). She was their only surviving child. Nancy and her parents lived in the Miami, FL area when
she was very young and moved to Myrtle Beach when she was 13 years old. Nancy resided in the area
until her passing, March 17 th after an almost 14 year battle with Alzheimer’s disease. During the last 13
years of her life she was first shortly cared for by MB Manor and the last 10 years, lovingly cared for by
the staff at Loris Rehab and Nursing Center. The family will always be so very grateful for the love and
care she received from so many of the staff. It was a blessing to know how much, Mom, was loved while
under their care.
Nancy attended and graduated from Myrtle Beach High School. She was a very athletic and academic
young lady who played basketball, was a cheerleader and belonged to several clubs. She also
participated in the annual Miss Sun Fun pageant and parade after graduation.
After high school, Nancy worked as a flight attendant for the former Continental Airlines and lived in the
Washington DC area for a short period of time.
She returned to Myrtle Beach and the family businesses, Sloppy Joe’s and The Bowery, where she
worked along side her parents, Dick and JoJo. Also later at Duffy’s Tavern and The Keg , with her
husband. After the demise of Sloppy Joe’s and other MB landmarks, Nancy worked in the food industry
in the MB area from the Santa Maria at the Caravelle to Pan American Pancake House and several other
locations. As she matured she engaged in less taxing employment and worked several other venues such
as the Pink House Square. Not one to want to retire her last place of employment was Myrtle Beach
Airport, where she was a parking attendant who enjoyed seeing where people were go and coming
from. She loved to strike up conversation and relate her own adventures as well as proudly share the
accomplishments of her children, son in laws, and grandchildren.
After moving back to Myrtle Beach, Nancy met a dashing, 6’4”, airman stationed at Myrtle Beach AFB,
the late Harold R Hart. Together they were a strikingly beautiful couple who became parents to three
daughters, Kelley, Casey (Nancy Lynn) and Cynthia.
Although their union only lasted 16 years, they remained friends throughout the majority of their
lifetimes.
When Nancy wasn’t busy working, she loved going places and was an avid reader. She traveled up and
down the East Coast, drove to California several times, made it to Canada as well as to Europe
(Holland), with her youngest daughter to meet her 1 st born grandchild. She also took up various arts and
crafts, like crochet and painting.
Nancy is survived by her daughters, Kelley (TJ), Casey, Cynthia (Terry) as well as 4 grandchildren,
Christopher, Cara, Nichole and Jennifer and 11 great grandchildren.
