Mina Lou Akers

Mina Lou Akers died peacefully on August 20, 2026. Mina was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, loved by her family as much as she loved being with them.

Born on September 21, 1933, in Baltimore, Maryland, Mina traveled across the U.S. and throughout Europe, but nowhere was she more at home than in Maryland. As a young woman, she graduated from Eastern High School and the American Institute of Banking and was the daughter of Ella Alberta Wyatt and Albert Robert Wyatt.

Before her marriage to Kenneth, Mina worked as a teller at Baltimore’s Central Savings Bank. They lived in Baltimore for many years and started their family. They later moved to Crofton, Maryland, where she loved hosting family Christmas parties and backyard crab feasts. Her grandchildren knew they could always count on her for after-dinner trips to Rita’s Italian Ice.  

In Crofton, Mina raised three children, Donna, Kenneth, and Allison, and became a dedicated member of the community. She served as a founding member of the Crofton Garden Club, was actively involved in the Red Hat Society, and was a member of St. Stephen’s Church. She returned to part-time work at the Sears catalog store and as a medical receptionist. 

Outside of work and raising their family, Mina and Kenneth reveled in multiple trips to Germany, browsing the Christmas markets and revisiting the neighborhood where her husband had lived while stationed with the U.S. Army after World War II. 

The couple were Baltimore Colts and Ravens fans and original season-ticket holders for both teams. They also frequently attended Orioles games at Camden Yards, cheering on Cal Ripken Jr. as he became baseball’s ultimate “Ironman.” Many of the Orioles games were enjoyed with children and grandchildren.

Mina and Kenneth left Maryland in 2006, relocating to Fishers, Indiana, to be closer to Donna, her husband, JJ, and daughter Allison, who lives in the Chicago area. Mina was devoted to her seven grandchildren: Elizabeth, John, Brian, Jenna, Andrew, Bradley, and Connor. She also continued to enjoy frequent trips back East to visit her son, Kenny, and his partner, Steven. 

Mina’s final move to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, with her daughter Donna and son-in-law took place on her 90th birthday in September 2023. She made many friends, including a new best friend, Elaine. While in South Carolina, Mina enjoyed outings and playing mahjong, hand and foot, and dirty marbles. She continued to follow the Ravens and to stay in touch with her family, including eight great-grandchildren.  

Mina Akers was preceded in her journey from this world by her husband, parents, brother, and sister-in-law. She will be missed by family and friends, old and new, near and far, who loved her verve and sweet nature, but who take comfort in knowing she is now at peace.
