Melvin Brice Melton

Melvin Brice Melton, 84, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, peacefully entered into the presence of his Lord on Sunday, July 5, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born on November 26, 1941, Mel was the son of Steve and Margaret Mosley Melton. He spent a lifetime building not only successful businesses, but lasting relationships. He believed a man’s word mattered, that hard work opened doors, and that family was life’s greatest blessing.

Friends and colleagues knew Mel as a true gentleman. He carried himself with quiet confidence, had a warm smile made even more memorable by his striking blue eyes, and was rarely seen without one of his signature red ties. He never met a stranger, always had time for a conversation, and possessed the rare ability to make people feel valued simply by being in his presence.

Long before his professional career flourished, Mel’s love of music led him to spend time as a disc jockey, developing a lifelong appreciation for the music of the 1950s and 1960s. Music remained one of the great joys of his life and continued to bring him comfort throughout the years.

Mel believed deeply in the value of education and lifelong learning. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business from the University of South Carolina and continued his studies at Winthrop College. That foundation helped shape a career marked by vision, integrity, and service.

Mel believed that success was never measured solely by a title or a balance sheet, but by the lives a person touched along the way. Gifted with both vision and determination, he built a career founded on hard work, fairness, and an unwavering commitment to doing what was right. He was among the early leaders who helped shape South Carolina’s housing initiatives and later founded GEM Management Company in Charlotte, North Carolina. Under his leadership, the company grew across eight states, providing quality housing for thousands of families.

To those who worked with him, Mel was far more than a respected businessman. He was a trusted mentor who believed a handshake still meant something, that promises should be kept, and that every person deserved to be treated with dignity and respect. He celebrated the successes of others as readily as his own and found genuine satisfaction in helping people build brighter futures.

Mel was also dedicated to serving others. He was a proud Shriner with Jamil Shrine and was active with Saint Andrews, believing that a meaningful life was measured not by what one accumulated, but by what one gave back.

Life also brought profound heartache. Mel shared two beloved children, William Howard Melton and Margaret Melton Moore, with his first wife, Linda Williams Melton. They were married at First Baptist Church in Lancaster, South Carolina. Following Linda’s untimely passing after a courageous battle with breast cancer, Mel lovingly raised his young children before later finding love again with Dorothy Darlene McGill.

Mel and Darlene were married in Cumberland, Maryland, at Saint Peter and Paul’s Catholic Church, beginning a marriage that would span nearly five decades. Together they welcomed their son, Jonathan, and built a home filled with love, laughter, faith, and unwavering devotion to one another.

Above every title and accomplishment, Mel’s greatest joy was his family. He was never happier than when surrounded by those he loved, watching his children grow into adults and delighting in his grandchildren: Madeline Melton, Ada Melton, Samuel Moore, and Layton Moore. His greatest legacy is not found in the businesses he built, but in the family he nurtured and the values he passed on.

Even as Parkinson’s disease and Lewy body dementia challenged him in his final years, they never diminished the character of the man his family knew. His strength, dignity, humor, and gentle spirit remained, reminding those around him of the remarkable husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend he had always been.

Mel is survived by his devoted wife, Dorothy Darlene Melton; his children, William Howard Melton, Margaret Melton Moore, and Jonathan Melton; his cherished grandchildren, Madeline Melton, Ada Melton, Samuel Moore, and Layton Moore; his sister, Sylvia Simpson; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and treasured friends.

His family finds comfort in believing that he has been joyfully reunited with those who went before him and now rests in perfect peace. Though his voice has grown quiet, the lessons he taught, the example he set, and the love he gave will continue to echo through generations.
