Marie Milad Youssef, 84, passed away peacefully Sunday, August 30, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on December 17, 1942, in Cairo, Egypt, Marie was the daughter of the late Milad and Julianna
Kaldas. In 1968, she married the late Fouad Gad Youssef. Together, they immigrated to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in 1972 with their children, Silvia and Milad. In 2009, Marie moved to Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, to live with her daughter’s family, where she remained until her passing.
Marie held an Associate degree in Fine Arts and was an avid oil painter. Her beautiful paintings continue to grace the walls and tables of her family’s homes, serving as cherished reminders of her creativity and talent.
Marie’s Christian faith was at the heart of her life. She prayed daily, attended liturgical services, and found great joy in being surrounded by family and friends in church. She devoted countless hours, along with her energy and talents, to helping Christian immigrants from Egypt establish new lives in America. She helped families find homes, secure employment, and work toward their own “American Dream.” Those who knew Marie often described her as fun, spunky, talented, and strong-willed—especially when advocating for the needs of others and her church.
From a young age, Marie was a passionate soccer fan and later was a coach and referee for her children’s teams. In her later years, she could often be found smiling as she watched her grandchildren excel in their activities. She was also an exceptional homemaker who took great pride in providing a welcoming home, always filled with love, laughter, and wonderful Egyptian food. She treasured every opportunity to host family and friends and bring people together around her table.
Marie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Fouad Gad Youssef, and her brother, Nasri Kaldas.
She is survived by her sister, Kamal Awad; her brothers, Ibrahim Kaldas and Magdi Kaldas; her sisters-in-law, Marsil Kaldas, Braxina Kaldas, and Iriny Kaldas; her daughter, Silvia Youssef Hanna; her son, Milad Youssef, and daughter-in-law, Christianne van der Heide Youssef; her grandchildren, Jacqueline Hanna, Rosemary Hanna, Ethan Youssef, and Phillip Youssef; and her nieces and nephews, Lillian Awad Washburn, George Awad, Susan Awad Ruane, Vivian Awad Lokhorst, Brenda Awad Bentz, Joshua Kaldas, Mark Kaldas, Jonathan Kaldas, Daniel Kaldas, and Bishoy Kaldas.
Marie was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, and friend. She brought laughter and warmth to every gathering and found great joy in each day, even as her horizon narrowed. She was a woman of deep faith, honor, courage, and love, whose strength remained evident despite the suffering she endured.
The family wishes to thank Marie’s family and friends for their loving care, prayers, and support throughout Marie’s final years. The family also extends its heartfelt gratitude to Marie’s home caregiver team and the staff at Amedisys Home Health for their compassion, love, and commitment to her care over the years.
