Linda Chatham Vereen

Blessed.  That's the word that comes to mind.  She was blessed by two parents; being in the Navy they were examples of love for country, determination, and strength.  She was blessed by three siblings - two sisters to share a childhood bedroom and learn how to be silly, and a baby brother to dote on.  She was blessed with a husband, and best friend, for 52 years, who put her first in everything he did, and shared with her a lifetime of adventure, travel, sports, and dining out.  She was blessed with a large extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins, sisters and brothers in law, nieces, and nephews, and more.  They relied on her in many, many family reunions and celebrations, and they called her "Favorite Aunt Linda." She was blessed with three headstrong daughters, whom she taught to be strong, self-sufficient, and sarcastic. 
They carry with them her best qualities, and blessed her with five amazing grandchildren.  She took each grandchild on a special, once in a lifetime, trip - from New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and the Bahamas, to two weeks on an Alaskan cruise.  She made each of them feel like her favorite, and reminded them every day that she loved them to the moon and back.  She was blessed with  friends from all corners of life - high school, college, young married Sunday School classes, teaching, volunteering, athletics, lunch bunches, book clubs, and widower groups.  She was blessed by a countless number of middle school, high school, and college students over her 30 years in education. She shared with them her love of math,  and she was blessed by their friendship, their praise, and the honors bestowed upon her.  She was blessed by the student athletes that she represented while at CCU, and loved opportunities to see them excel in their sport careers and salute her from the field or court or diamond.
Throughout her life, she was blessed with summers on the beach, weekends boating and water-skiing, winter days on the slopes, hours in the stands watching football, baseball, and basketball, months spent in the islands, and days spent searching out road side diners and gas station diet cokes.
She was blessed with vacations all over the world, and second homes from Garden City to Green Turtle Cay, holidays surrounded by her little family of five to sometimes more than one hundred.  She was blessed by her homes on the Waterway and on the inlet, with space for everyone, and Christmas decor year-round.
She was blessed to receive so many honors - Professor Emeritus at CCU, Legendary Fan of the Game at USC, the Vereen Tunnel at Chanticleer's Vrooman Field, and a student scholarship in her name at the Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach, just to name a few.
She was blessed by the many doctors, nurses, and caregivers over the past two decades, who devoted as much time to caring for her as listening to her stories. She was blessed to survive so many trials, health setbacks, and heartbreaks, during which times, she was blessed to be surrounded by, and cared for, by her family and friends, through visits, calls, texts, gifts, and prayers.
She was blessed with intelligence and wit, stubbornness and loyalty, devotion and dedication, and a love for milkshakes, Girl Scout cookies, and Krispy Kreme donuts.
She was blessed, and so were we.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert L. Chatham and Mary Bowers Chatham, of Columbia, and her siblings, Margaret C. Ammons, of Myrtle Beach, and Robert L. Chatham, Jr., of Greenville. She lost the love of her life, Arthur Wayne Vereen, in December 2020. They are both survived by their daughters, Beth (Chad) Sisson and Lindsey (Jessica) Vereen of Myrtle Beach, and Katharine (Stephen) Thompson of Birmingham, but their legacies will surely continue in the lives of their true joys - the grandchildren, Mackenzie, Foster, Payne, Patrick, and Wade. She is also survived by her doting sister, Betty C. Ellison, of Lexington, in addition to almost 80 years of family and friends.

A celebration of life has been scheduled for what would have been their 58th wedding anniversary, on July 28, 2026, at the MB Train Depot, beginning at noon. In lieu of flowers, please join us for lunch with a favorite dish or dessert!!
