Laura “Laurie” Mauldin Stewart departed this life for her heavenly home on December 24, 2025.
She was born on December 19, 1943 in Rock Hill, SC to parents William Mark Mauldin, Jr. and Laura O’Neal Mauldin. Laurie graduated from Mary Baldwin College and moved to Washington, D.C., where she met the love of her life- John C. Stewart, Jr. while both were interning in the United States Senate. John and Laurie were married for 56 years and resided in Myrtle Beach for 52 years. Laurie taught elementary school with the Horry County School District for many years and continued her education in her retirement by enrolling in numerous courses at Coastal Carolina University.
Laurie was very active in the community for she served on the Board of Visitors for the Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts at Coastal Carolina, was a founding member of the Long Bay Symphony Guild, a member of the Friends of the Villa for the Franklin G. Burroughs Art Museum, and a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church of Myrtle Beach. Laurie was a published author and loved her book club. John and Laurie often enjoyed traveling abroad and would immerse themselves into the culture, including learning the language of the countries which they traveled.
A nurturing mother, faithful friend, and gentle soul, she gave of herself and asked for little in return. Her quick wit will be missed. Laurie fought a long battle with dementia and will be remembered for her courage and strength during her struggle.
She was predeceased by her parents and her husband. Surviving include her son, John Calvin “ Jack” Stewart III (Donya)of Myrtle Beach, Catherine O’Neal “Kate” Stewart of Raleigh, N.C., granddaughter Summer Trent Stewart of Myrtle Beach, sister Mary Mauldin McKeown (Charles) of Black Mountain, N.C. and sister Betsy Mauldin McCray of Columbus, N.C. She also leaves behind many cousins, in-laws, nieces, nephews, and friends to treasure her memory.
A service will be held on Friday, January 9 at 11:00 am at The First Presbyterian Church of Myrtle Beach, and the family will receive friends immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Myrtle Beach First Presbyterian Church in care of the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund, P.O. Box 70127 , Myrtle Beach, S.C. 29572-0127.
