R. Lane Smith, 79, of Myrtle Beach passed away September 13, 2021. He was born on December 18, 1941 in Anderson, South Carolina to Delvin Lindsey and Eva MacIntyre Smith. He attended Boys High School in Anderson and Clemson University, where he belonged to Delta Phi Kappa, Phi Psi, and Phi Kappa Phi. He graduated with honors in 1964. He served in the United States Marine Corps and worked for 35 years in the textile industry, beginning with Milliken Inc, later as Vice President of Riegel Textile Corporation and retired as Senior Vice President of Guilford Industries. He was a member of Trinity Church. A lifelong golfer, he was a member of the Dunes Club and was a charter member of the Donald Ross Society. He was a Master Gardener, photographer, an avid competitive Glock shooter, and a member of Sam’s Club.
He is preceded in death by his sister Linda Smith Bolding and his wife Sue Hunnicutt Smith. He is survived by his wife, Louise Spann Smith. Surviving children are Eva Marie Smith of Spartanburg, Richard Lane Smith of Spartanburg, Susan Smith Thompson and husband Benjamin of Raleigh, Bryant Mackey and wife Tracey of Küsnacht Switzerland, and Dargan Mackey Mudge and husband Matthew of Greenville. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren Robert Lane Smith, Andrew Douglas Smith, Benjamin Lane Thompson, Charles Sheffield Mackey, Sarah Courtney Mackey, Allison Grace Mackey, David Robert Mackey, Rowan Dale Mudge, Samuel Bryant Mudge, Eleanor Louise Mudge, and Brittany Cromer Taylor.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, September 16, 2021 at 11:00 am at Trinity Church 3000 North Kings Highway Myrtle Beach, SC 29577. Masks are required for unvaccinated individuals and the family encourages them for vaccinated individuals as well.
