Obituary

Joseph Michael Hoban, 78, passed away on November 30, 2025, with his family by his side. Born to Joseph and Marie Hoban on June 24, 1947, and raised in the Bronx, NY, he will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him.

Joe was a true American hero serving his country during the Vietnam War as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne, “Screaming Eagles”, specializing in air assault operations. His military decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, three distinguished Purple Hearts, several Army Commendation Medals, and the Sharpshooter Medal. Following Vietnam, Joe became an operating engineer for commercial buildings, running many office parks over the years and then eventually retiring as the property manager of Federal Plaza in NYC. He took care of the people who worked for him over the years and was well-liked by everyone. He was, as they say, a stand-up guy – “the man in the arena…” – described so beautifully in Teddy Roosevelt’s poem, It’s not the critic who counts – his favorite.

He was strong, generous, funny, smart, stoic, dependable, tough, and loving. He loved a good quote and believed that character is who you are when no one is looking – and he was truly a man of great character. Those who knew Joe know he was always ready to share a drink and made the absolute best Bloody Mary’s, coleslaw, and potato pancakes. He loved to read, and until recently, he rarely missed an episode of Jeopardy where he frequently got more correct answers than the contestants.

Joe is survived by his loving family, including his children - Larry Christ, Carl Christ, Kim Christ, and Tricia Hoban; and his five beautiful granddaughters, Samantha Stewart, Daniella Ianiro (Tony), Nikki Stewart, Toni Stewart, and Bianca Christ. He is also survived by his brother Dennis Hoban (Kathy). Additionally, Joe is loved and respected tremendously by many nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Patricia “Patsy” Greany, and lost the love of his life, his beloved wife, Rennie Hoban of 54 years in 2024.
