Joseph Erwin Campbell, known to friends and family as Joe, passed away peacefully on April 30, 2025. Born on July 5, 1940, to the late Orville Muriel Campbell and Olive Dye Campbell, Joe was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, and friend whose warmth, integrity, and remarkable work ethic left a lasting legacy on the lives of all who knew him.
Joe is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Doris Jean Osborne Campbell, with whom he shared a lifetime of partnership, laughter, and devotion. He was the proud father of Barbara Jo Campbell (with her husband Kitt Bagwell) and Timothy Charles Campbell (with his wife Amanda Campbell). He was a beloved grandfather to Macy and Ava Bagwell, and to Eleanor and Emily Campbell. Joe also leaves behind his brothers Ralph Campbell and Michael “Mick” Campbell. He was preceded in death by his brother Charles “Chuck” Campbell and sister Linda Campbell Stanley.
Joe attended Marietta College on a football scholarship. As a graduate of Marietta, he earned a degree in Petroleum Engineering, laying the foundation for a distinguished and respected career with Columbia Natural Gas, later known as Columbia Natural Resources. His brilliance as an engineer and draftsman was matched only by his unmatched vision, precision, and tenacity. He was widely admired for his intellect, innovative thinking, and ability to solve complex problems with elegance and efficiency.
Outside of work, Joe was a passionate outdoorsman and avid sportsman. He found joy and peace in the woods as a hunter and on the fairway as a golfer. A lifelong car enthusiast, he took great pride in his 1967 Chevelle Super Sport, a symbol of his love for classic cars and mechanical craftsmanship.
Joe will be remembered as a man of principle and warmth – respected by his peers, deeply loved by his family, and admired by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched, the knowledge he shared, and the example he set every day.
