Dr. John Lanier Sprawls, Sr.

John Sprawls born on July 13, 1938, was the son of Gwendolyn Howell Sprawls and John Fuller Sprawls. He was born in Georgetown, SC and lived there during his formative years graduating from Wynah High School. He went on to attend the University of the South, Swanee, Tennessee and graduated from Newberry College. He later earned his Master’s Degree from Georgia Southern University and his Doctoral Degree from the University of South Carolina.
After teaching one year at Aiken High School, he became principal of Wagener Elem. School. He then became an Elementary School Supervisor for the SC State Department of Education. Later, he was principal of Seven Oaks Elementary and was intramental in the planning of Leaphart Elementary where he was principal after construction was completed. Next, he became principal of Irmo High School. After moving to Horry County, he was principal of Myrtle Beach Elementary and retired from North Myrtle Beach Elementary after 37 years in the educational field. Even after retirement, he did interim work in Horry County Schools for 4 years. During his years in education, he received many honors and achievement awards.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Louise Shealy Sprawls of 62 Yeas, two children, John Lanier, Jr., Patrick Willis (Mark), and son-in-law, Doug Ford. Four grandchildren, Ashley Sprawls Jackson, Carson Patrick Livers, Michael Reid Livers, and Robert Martin Sprawls. A step-grandson, Justin Ford, a step-granddaughter, Rachel Burns (Jason) and 5 step-great grandchildren. A sister, Carol Sprawls Snyder, a niece, Lisa Freedman(Barry), a nephew, William Snyder(Michelle). Three great nephews, Rhett, Brice, and Grant Freedman.
He was predeceased in death by his parent, his daughter, Rahnda Elizabeth Sprawls Ford, his brother-in-law, Wayne Snyder and special family friend, Elliott Swartz and his pup, Rascal.
John loved gardening, shagging, playing cards, and playing golf until his health failed. He and Frances traveled throughout the US, Canada, and the Caribbean, not missing an island on the 30 cruises they took.

John was a devout Christian. He was a member of Risen Christ Lutheran Church. As a teenager, he served as an assistant to the Priest at Prince George Wynah. He held many offices during his many years as a Lutheran including President of the church council several times, committee leader, school board chairman, Sunday School teacher, and Elder. He loved the Lord and was an inspiration to others.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Risen Christ Academy, 10595 North Kings Highway, Myrtle Beach, SC or a charity of your choice.
Visitation will be at McMillan Small Funeral Home in Myrtle Beach, SC on Saturday evening, October 28, 2023, from 5pm to 7 pm. Memorial Services will be at Risen Christ Lutheran Church at 2pm on Sunday, October 29. 2023.
