Obituary

Janet Roth passed away on December 12, 2025, at the age of 90, while residing at Portside at Grande Dunes Independent Living in Myrtle Beach, SC. Janet has now been united with the love of her life, the late Richard (“Dick”) Roth, with whom she shared over 50 years of marriage before his passing in 2014.

Janet met Dick at Epiphany Lutheran Church (the “God is Love church”) in Baltimore when Janet was just 14 years old. They married a few days after high school graduation and started a family the next year. They both served at Epiphany in many capacities as they raised their children Ronald Roth, Nancy (Gary) January, and Susan (Robert) Graff. Janet taught Sunday School and played the piano, while Dick served as council member and usher. Their faith was very important to them, and that faith carried them through life with a heart of love that they passed to their children and grandchildren Stephanie and Kelly. After moving to Bel Air, MD, they joined St. John’s Lutheran Church in Parkville, MD, where Dick’s cousin was a pastor. Janet loved that church also and enjoyed watching the service online each week right up to her death.

After her youngest child started school, Janet worked part time as a cafeteria aide and then secretary at Herring Run Junior High School in Baltimore, MD. Later she became a full-time secretary and helped open Northeast Middle School. She is fondly remembered by all who worked with her as a kind, capable secretary that had a soft heart for the struggling, misbehaved students that ended up spending too much time in her office waiting to see the principal or just being separated from the classroom. She touched so many lives there, giving the students the loving discipline they needed to be as successful as possible.

Janet and Dick both loved duckpin bowling and bowled in leagues multiple times a week, still bowling weekly way into their senior years. They enjoyed travel, dining out, and trips to Ocean City Maryland. They also enjoyed card games of every kind, and Janet was able to enjoy that right up through her final days at Portside. She loved bridge and especially enjoyed her bridge groups in Bel Air, MD and at Portside. She had many good memories of Bel Air, to include daily visits with her best friend in her later years, Rae Eberwine, who took good care of her until she moved to Myrtle Beach to be closer to family.

In addition to her children and grandchildren, Janet is survived by many wonderful nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her brother, Bill, her parents, Helen and Will, and her son-in-law Robert.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the exceptional staff at Portside Senior Living. From her hairdresser Brenda to the housekeeping and front desk staff, to the warm and friendly waitstaff at dinner each night, she greatly appreciated the support in her final years.

Janet is now resting in peace in the hands of the Lord, who she fervently prayed to every morning and night. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her, as she always brought a smile, a laugh, and a silver lining to every situation. She truly knew the “peace that passes all understanding” deep in her heart.

Janet has been cremated, and she will be buried this spring at Gardens of Faith in Baltimore, MD. A memorial service and reception will be announced in the future.
