Jan C Barnes

Jan Christian Barnes, 77, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 18, 2026.

Jan was born on July 15, 1949, in Washington, D.C., and was raised just across the Potomac River in Virginia alongside his siblings, Jacquit Ann Otty and Thomas “Tommy” Barnes.

Having lived with a disability himself, Jan understood firsthand the challenges faced by others with disabilities and had a special place in his heart for helping others. During his time working as a janitor, he had the opportunity to assist children with disabilities, an experience that was especially meaningful to him. He later worked in sales at a plumbing warehouse.

Jan had a lifelong love of music and especially enjoyed singing. He spent time singing with a barbershop group, where he was able to share his love of music with others. He was also a sports enthusiast and a devoted fan of the Washington Redskins.

Jan is survived by his siblings, Jacquit Ann Otty and Thomas “Tommy” Barnes; and his nieces and nephews, Allison Rose Otty, Lese Valentin, Loren Ann Barnes, Tara Katnine Barnes, Lindsay Barnes, Joseph Dean Otty, and Ken “Gilo” Valentin.

A memorial service celebrating Jan’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at Trinity United Methodist Church in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Family and friends are warmly invited to gather together to honor and remember Jan.

In keeping with Jan’s wishes, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church in support of the choir or scholarship fund, or to an organization of the donor’s choice in his memory.
