Obituary

James Lee “Jim” Garrett, known to friends as “G-Rat,” passed away peacefully in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on November 4, 2025 at the age of 71.

Born on December 18, 1953 to Corrine Cain and James Marshall Garrett Jr., Jim grew up in Jacksonville, Florida, remaining close to his extended family just across the state line in South Georgia. Those early years shaped his strong sense of loyalty, hard work, and appreciation for family—values that stayed with him throughout his life.

Jim proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for 20 years, including active duty during Desert Storm. After retiring from the Air Force, he continued his life of service with the Myrtle Beach Police Department, where he dedicated another 25 years before his second retirement.

Jim was known for his integrity, quick wit, and unwavering love for his family. He had a natural gift for helping others, always willing to lend a hand, offer advice, or show up when someone was in need. His generosity and dedication extended far beyond his career as he continually served his friends, neighbors, and community with kindness and humility.

He will be deeply missed by his devoted wife Debra Garrett; his children Bryan Garrett and Corrie Garrett Gregory (Joe); and his granddaughter Sophia Gregory. He is also survived by his stepchildren Sonny Causey (Terri) and their son Destin Causey, and Cammie Holmes (Brentin) and their children Payton Holmes (and Payton’s children Declan Holmes and Nalani Clark) and Willow Holmes. Jim is also survived by his sister Lily Rubin and a host of extended family and friends who loved him dearly.

Jim’s life was defined by service, loyalty, and love—values that will continue to inspire those who knew him.

A private family service will be held, with a celebration of life to be announced at a later date.
