James H. Masterson of Myrtle Beach, SC (Formerly of Homer, NY), passed away, peacefully at
home on March 15, 2025. He was born in Cortland, NY on July 25, 1938, to William L. and Alice
J. Masterson.
Jim graduated from Homer High School in 1956, where he lettered in football, basketball and
baseball. He received an associate’s degree from Alfred State in 1958. Jim’s working career was
focused on Livestock/Agricultural Feed & Nutrition. In 1959 he went to work at Wheat Brothers
Feed Store on Fulton St. in Homer and was manager there until it closed; he then became the
manager of Round House Mill, and eventually became a salesman for Young’s Minerals/Cargill,
until he retired in July 2000. He was very proud to be a Life Member of the Homer Fire
Department. Jim faithfully attended Ocean View Baptist Church in Myrtle Beach, SC.
In addition to his parents, Jim was predeceased by his sister Barbara Purchas, brother-in-law
John B. Purchas, and his son-in-law Rick Race.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce; daughter Patricia Masterson-Race, son Bill (Sherri) Masterson
and their mother Beverly Johnson; three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; several
cousins, a niece, a nephew, and many close friends.
Jim was one of a kind and enjoyed golf, fishing, hunting and a good card game; especially pitch
or three-thirteen. He also loved to spend time with family and friends visiting Myrtle Beach. In
keeping with his wishes there are no public services. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in
Jim’s name may be made to the Homer Fire Department, 45 South Main Street, Homer, NY
13077.
