Henry Futch Obituary

“The best portion of a good man’s life is his little nameless, unencumbered acts of kindness and of love.” – William Wordsworth

Henry Sidney Futch was born on December 3, 1939 in Adel, Georgia.  On Tuesday, January 4, 2022, in the comfort of his own home, Sidney, 82, passed into the arms of his Lord and Savior.

A resident of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and formerly of Highlands, North Carolina, Sidney was a gentle soul whose life was indeed in harmony with the poet’s creed, full of sincere, thoughtful acts. With no need for credit or recognition, it was his nature to find ways to serve others first. For example, while keeping a watchful eye on his neighbors’ property when they were away, Sidney, without fanfare, might notice a basement light accidentally left on or he might be found in a neighbor’s yard, picking up sticks and debris after an overnight wind.

In the business world, Sidney was successful and achieved much. He was firm and clear-minded, dedicated and sure of purpose. Nevertheless, his secret to success, no doubt, was that his heart and mind never strayed from the solid, honest values he had learned back home in Cook County, Georgia. Yes, he was effective in a company business meeting, but he was unpretentious enough to invite a friend to join him in conversation in the quiet comfort of a front porch rocking chair.

As Sidney’s race was in its final lap, even then, he was thoughtful and polite to those around him ... his quiet concern more for his caretakers than for himself.

Sidney was preceded in death by his father Loy, his mother Lillie, his brother Herman, and his son Andy. Sidney was loved and cherished by many people including family members: his devoted wife Gwen; son Scott Futch of Auburn, AL; son Tyler Futch of Myrtle Beach, SC; daughter-in-law Karen Futch of Juliette, GA; sister Montine Wood (Harrell) of Adel, GA; his grandchildren Brooke Futch, Zach Futch, Mary Claire Futch, Patrick Futch, and great-granddaughter Sydney Dru Chambers.

A family memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 8, 2022 at Salem Primitive Baptist Church in Adel, Georgia, with the Elders Thad Marshall and Dwight Marshall officiating.  Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery with Rev. Bruce Merriman conducting the graveside service.
