Obituary

Helen Kay (Vincent) Shaffer, 83, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus, following a short illness, with her family at her side on March 9, 2025 at Myrtle Beach Manor.

Born on July 7, 1941 in Clarksburg, West Virginia, Helen was the only daughter of Everett H. and Margaret H. Vincent. She dedicated much of her life to caring for her family as a stay-at-home mother before transitioning into a professional role as a secretary in the Business Department at Fairmont State College where she worked until her well-earned retirement.

High school sweethearts, Helen and Jim shared their married love for one another for over 46 years in West Virginia, spending an additional 15 years in their new home of Myrtle Beach. Her love for her family was evident as she supported her son, Eric, in his golfing endeavors, her daughter, Julie Ann, in her piano and musical experiences, and her grandchildren’s sports, singing, and acting ventures.  She was an avid golf fan and enjoyed collecting autographs of PGA pros.  A passionate football fan, Helen was a steadfast supporter of West Virginia, Marshall, and Clemson University Athletics and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Helen was a woman of deep faith and unwavering devotion to her loved ones. She found joy in teaching Children’s Sunday School and singing in church choirs. She was an active member of the First Methodist Church of Myrtle Beach for the last 15 years and considered her ARK Sunday School Class to be her second family. Her kindness extended beyond her family and congregation as she was known for visiting others and brightening their days with homemade cookies and gifts.

Beyond her faith and family, Helen was an active founding member of the Mountaineer Dollhouse Miniature Enthusiasts Club and a lifelong participant in Bridge Clubs in Fairmont, WV and Myrtle Beach, SC. She was a volunteer with the Fairmont Senior High School Choral groups for many years.

She is survived by her beloved husband, James B. Shaffer; her daughter, Julie Ann Martin (Patrick) of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; her son, Eric James Shaffer (Constanza) of Valencia, California; and her cherished grandchildren: Justin Martin of Plant City, Florida; Jordan Martin of Greenville, South Carolina; Brandon Shaffer of Valencia, California; and Gabriella Shaffer of Valencia, California. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Helen’s legacy of love, faith, and generosity will be honored with a Celebration of Life Memorial Service at 2:00pm on March 13, 2025 at the First Methodist Church located at 901 N Kings Highway, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577.

Special thanks are offered to Conway Medical Center and especially the Staffs of Myrtle Beach Manor and Traditions Health for their attentive, gentle care. Appreciation is also expressed to the ARK Sunday School Class members, Pastor Joel McMakin, and the First Methodist Church Staff for their prayers and support

Donations may be made in her memory to the Children's Ministry fund, First Methodist Church, Myrtle Beach, SC.
