Fred Carr, a man of boundless spirit and endless curiosity, left us on November 13th, 2024, at the age of 82. His journey through life was anything but ordinary, and his legacy is one of love.
Born in Clinton, NC on June 24th, 1942, Fred Carr was a storyteller, a dreamer, and a doer. He had a knack for turning the mundane into enjoyment, whether it was through his hilarious, and often overexaggerated tales of his childhood or his inventive solutions to everyday problems. His laughter was infectious, and his wisdom was profound.
He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, always putting family first. His unwavering commitment to his family was evident in every aspect of his life, from the way he lovingly supported his wife and children to the joy he found in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He cherished every moment spent with them, whether it was planning vacations, taking his “grands” shopping, or simply being a constant in their lives. His eyes would light up with pride and happiness whenever he spoke of them, and his love for them was unconditional. In his own words, his grandchildren made him “the happiest and proudest grandpa on earth”.
His passions were as varied as they were vibrant. From restoring old homes to self-teaching new trades, he embraced life with both hands and encouraged those around him to do the same. He believed in living fully and loving deeply a philosophy he imparted to his children and grandchildren.
Fred graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from NC State and earned a Ph. D from UNC-Chapel in Medicinal Chemistry and Zoology. A few years later he was registered as a Patent Agent. During his career he was an Assistant Professor at Philadelphia College of Medicine where he received a National Research Service Award; Assistant Director of Research Services Administration at Northwestern University; Director of Technology Development at the University of NC; CEO of Progressive International Electronics; and Founder/Chairman of Atlantic Current Energy. As an inventor, scientist, and entrepreneur, he had many patents and wrote several books on the patenting process, and the author of many scientific articles.
Fred, affectionately known as Pops or Papa, is survived by his wife of 58 years, Anna, and his son, Josh. He also leaves behind his granddaughters, Delilah Portillo and Kiera Mudge, along with Kiera's husband, Ryan Mudge, and their children, Odyn Portillo and Ryan Mudge Jr. Additionally, Fred is survived by his sisters, Peggy Carr of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Patricia Robers of San Diego, California. He was predeceased by his son, Jacob K. Carr, his brothers, Stewart and Stanley, and his sister, Dorothy.
Fred’s loved ones will carry his spirit forward in their hearts and actions. Though he may no longer walk among us, his legacy lives on in the stories we share, the lessons we’ve learned, and the love we continue to spread.
Let us celebrate the remarkable life of Fred K. Carr, a man who taught us that the greatest adventure is a life well-lived.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
