Esther Conrad Pappalardo, 94, passed away on Thursday, October 22, 2020, in Myrtle Beach, SC. She was born March 9, 1926, to the late Andras and Barbara Kovacs Hanak.
She grew up in Budapest, Hungary, until WWII circumstances displaced her with her husband and young son to Ethiopia, where she taught home economics, sewing, fine needlework and hand-embroidery at Princess Tenagnework School for Women. Upon graduation, her students were recognized for skills which helped them earn independent living.
She was married to the late Otto Franz Conrad from Hungary, widowed, and remarried to the late Giuseppe Ettore Pappalardo from Sicily. She immigrated to the United States in 1968 to give her children a better life.
She was predeceased by her son, the late Ernest Otto Conrad and survived by her daughter, Esther Conrad Grant; four grandchildren, Angela Conrad Johnson, Richard Conrad, Nicole Alexandra Grant and Jason Edward Grant; three great-grandchildren, Logan Johnson, Jobey Conrad and Gabriella Reese Grant; and one great-great-grandchild, Annalee Rose Johnson.
A grave-side blessing and committal will be held on Tuesday, October 27, 2020, at Fairfax Memorial Park in Fairfax, Virginia.
