Emily Dockery Obituary



Emily Cheshire Dockery died, peacefully, on Saturday October 9, 2021.
She was born on July 16, 1924 in Raleigh, North Carolina.  She was the daughter of the late Colonel and Mrs. Godfrey Cheshire of Raleigh.  She was, also, the granddaughter of the late Episcopal Bishop, the Right Reverend Joseph Blount Cheshire, Jr.

She attended St. Mary's Junior College in Raleigh.  In 1941, she was the leader of the Terpsichorean Ball in Raleigh.
She was a long time resident of Rockingham, N.C. and lived there for many years with her late husband, John Covington Dockery, Jr.  They eventually retired to their home on the ocean in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.  In Rockingham, she was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Messiah and was a member of several clubs in Rockingham and was President of the PTA when her children were school age.  She was an active member of the Myrtle Beach community in years past.  She was a long time member of the Dunes Golf and Beach Club as well as Trinity Episcopal Church where she faithfully served on the Altar Guild.  She was a member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames in the State of North Carolina.
She is survived by her three children, John Covington Dockery, III, Emily Dockery Carlson (Carl), Alice Dockery Preyer (Britt).  She is also survived by her six grandchildren, Laurin Carlson Hardwick (Steve), Carl Ivan Carlson, IV (Lauren), Smith Cheshire Carlson, Britt Armfield Preyer, Jr. (Elizabeth), John Calder Preyer (Nicole) and William Harris Preyer.  In addition, she is survived by six great grandchildren, Smith Darin Hardwick, Nicholas Sage Hardwick, Sydney Harris Preyer, Jane Sairfax Preyer, Elizabeth Dockery Preyer and Alice Armfield Preyer.  She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Mrs. Godfrey Cheshire, Jr. and many nieces and nephews.
Her funeral service will be held on Thursday, October the 14th at 1 PM at Good Shepherd Anglican Church, 700 35th Avenue North, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Memorials may be made to Grand Strand Humane Society, 3241 Mr. Joe White Avenue, Myrtle Beach, S. C.
