Loving mother and nanny, Carolyn “Elaine” Batson Malcolm, 81, passed away Sunday, May 11, 2025 at home surrounded by her family. She was the daughter of the late Harold Manning Batson Sr. and Carolyn Farr Batson born on October 25, 1943 in Greenville, SC. She graduated from Berea High School in 1961 where she proudly served as team captain for the ladies basketball team. She was a member of Berea First Baptist Church, in Greenville, SC.
Elaine was predeceased by her husband Barry Malcolm of Charlotte, NC; fraternal grandparents Henry Lee and Geneva Poole Batson of Greenville, SC; maternal grandparents John Edward and Carrie Groce Farr of Greenville, SC; brother Harold Manning Batson, Jr. of Greenville, SC; nephew Mitchell Dean Batson of Greenville, SC; and her loving aunt Helen Batson Pardue of Greenville, SC.
She is survived by her loving daughters, Milissa Alexander-Pierce (Sam) of Blacksburg, NC, Pamela Lea Conder (Bryon) of Myrtle Beach, SC; granddaughter Amanda Lea Alexander of Greer, SC; grandson Darryl Shawn Ivester of Seven Lakes, NC; and her beloved dog companions Molly and Tank. Also surviving are extended family members sister-in-law Patricia Batson; nephew Brian Batson (Allison); cousin Jevialyn Robinson, and several special nieces and nephews.
Elaine, affectionately known by family and friends as “Nanny”, never met a stranger. Her outgoing personality, contagious smile, and love of all people will be tremendously missed by those who knew and loved her. She had many great adventures and successes throughout the course of her life, including visiting the World’s Fair in New York in 1964, traveling all over the country, writing programming code for computers in the 1970’s, working in multiple roles for WBTV in Charlotte, NC in the 1970’s and 1980’s, working for Bi-Lo Corporate Offices in Mauldin, SC as the Consumer Relations Manager until her retirement in 2005. After retirement, she enjoyed helping her daughter and son-in-law with their business, working for the Home Builders Association in Greenville, SC and she also took loving care of her aging parents until their passing. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, going to the beach to search for shells to add to her collection, playing golf, and simply being around people. Over the years, she developed a love for a wide variety of arts and crafts including painting pictures, cross-stitching, needlepoint, and sewing.
A memorial service will be held 3:00 p.m. Friday, May 16, 2025 at the McMillian-Small Funeral Home, 910 67th Ave North, Myrtle Beach, SC, conducted by Rev. Benji Merritt. Visitation will be held 1:30 – 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Services will be live streamed at www.msfh.net. An additional gathering of friends and family will be held at a later date in Greenville, SC to honor Elaine’s memory.
