Dr. James Bernard Stenger, 73, formerly of Cincinnati, Ohio, and most recently of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, passed away on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at Brightwater in Myrtle Beach.
Born on July 18, 1952, in Morgantown, West Virginia, Jim was the son of the late A. Bernard Stenger, Jr. and Louanna Lee Stenger. He was raised in Morgantown and pursued a distinguished academic and professional career in engineering.
Jim earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, magna cum laude, from West Virginia University in 1974. He continued his studies at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, receiving a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1976. In 1985, he returned to West Virginia University, where he earned a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Mechanical Engineering.
Throughout his accomplished career, Dr. Stenger held positions of increasing responsibility in both industry and academia. He worked as a Research Engineer for Carrier Corporation in Syracuse, New York, and later as a Staff Engineer with GE Aircraft Engines in Cincinnati, Ohio. He also served at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, within the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, where he was both Assistant Professor and Assistant Dean. Later, he worked as an Aerospace Engineer at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, contributing his expertise under a government security clearance.
Beyond his professional achievements, Jim was passionate about music and community service. He was an active member of the Cincinnati Chorus, performing locally and regionally, including a memorable appearance at Carnegie Hall in New York City. He also had a lifelong love of animals, especially dogs. His beloved Alaskan Husky, Grendel, was a cherished companion, and Jim generously volunteered with a local dog rescue organization.
Jim is survived by his sisters and their spouses, Linda Ann and Stanley J. Cardaciotto of Lower Gwynedd, Pennsylvania, and Susan Lee and John R. Forrelli of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; as well as four nieces and two nephews.
He will be remembered for his intellect, dedication, kindness, love of music, and compassion for animals. His family and friends will deeply miss him.
A private burial service will be held for family.
