David Jenkins, II Obituary

North Myrtle Beach, SC – David Meredith Jenkins, II, age 85 years, who lived with Parkinson’s for over 14 years, died of complications of a stroke on September 14, 2021 in North Myrtle Beach, SC.  He was born on September 30, 1935 in Benham, Kentucky, the son of the late Dr. David Meredith Jenkins and Virginia Bachman Jenkins of Bloomington, Illinois.

Dave graduated from Bloomington High School in Bloomington, Illinois (1953) and DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana (1957) with a degree in Psychology.  After short stints selling Yellow Page ads and as a Claims Adjuster for State Farm Insurance, Dave served in the US Army and as a Special Agent in the US Army Counter-Intelligence Corps.  In 1964 Dave earned his LLB & Juris Doctor from George Washington University School of Law and was admitted to the Virginia Bar and District of Columbia Bar, and to the US Supreme Court Bar in 1968.  Dave spent the next chapter of his career at various roles in the legislative and executive branches on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. and as an attorney and lobbyist for Swift & Company, Goodyear Tire and Rubber, Miles Laboratories, and SmithKline Beckman.  Dave ended his Washington D.C. work career as a founding member of the Washington Liaison Group, LLC.  Never one to sit still, Dave spent his early retirement years as a Starter for Barefoot Resort Golf Courses and as a Real Estate Broker for Oceanfront Guru.

Dave had a passion for community and civic service.  He served in numerous positions on local election, precinct and Republican party Committees and Conventions, as Commissioner and coach of several local youth basketball, soccer and baseball leagues including as Chief Umpire of Fairfax Little League.  Dave also served as a Deacon at McLean Presbyterian Church and Falls Church Presbyterian Church.  Dave served his community as President of the Olde Creek PTA in Fairfax, Virginia, and as an active member at Cooper Middle School PTA and Langley High School PTA in McLean, Virginia where he resided and raised his family for many years.

Dave was active in many trade associations and clubs including Congressional Country Club, Burning Tree Country Club, The Army And Navy Club, The Capitol Hill Club, 116 Club, City Club of Washington, Capital Society of Clubs, National Lawyers Club, International Club of Washington DC and as the President of the Illinois State Society of Washington DC as well as the General Chairman of the National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington DC in 1979.

Dave was an accomplished athlete who loved to play golf and follow The Chicago Cubs, The Washington Capitals, The Washington Redskins, and the Myrtle Beach Pelicans.  He was a natural entertainer and loved to play the piano and organ as a self-taught musician.  Dave enjoyed Krispy Kremes and Duck Donuts, Pepper Jack and Pub Cheese, and a good margarita on the rocks.  A strong and friendly handshake was his signature along with an endless supply of advice on useful ways to use a roll of duct tape.  He was a happy hoarder and maintained an off-site storage unit and garage full of “treasures” until the day he died, often advising “One Copy Is Never Enough”.   His sense of humor and quick wit were the delight of everyone who knew him including his many friends and neighbors in the Barefoot Resorts community where he was the first President of the Barefoot Residents HOA, a long-time member of the Barefoot Residents HOA Board of Directors, and an active participant in Barefoot community events for the past 20+ years.

Dave is survived by his wife of 44 years, Susan Boone Jenkins, and his five children:  Laurie Jenkins Sangeloty (Paul), Linda Jenkins Thomason (George), David Richard Jenkins (Tracey), Mandy Jenkins Rispoli (Joseph) and Meredith Jenkins Blackwell (Christopher).  Dave was blessed with 10 loving grandchildren: Matthew, Thomas (Lauren) and Michelle Sangeloty, Benjamin and Geoffrey Thomason, Andrew and Corinne Jenkins, James and Luke Rispoli, and Gavin Blackwell.  He is also survived by his sister, Deborah Jenkins Progar and brother Dr. Charles Jenkins (Carol), both of Colorado as well as a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Nancy Boone Wilkinson of North Myrtle Beach, SC and Charles Boone, Jr. (Brenda) of Wedowee, Alabama plus many beloved nieces and nephews.
