Charles Wayne Barker, 91, of Carolina Forest, died May 6, 2021 in Myrtle Beach, SC. Born in Martinsburg, WV, he was the son of the late Guy Oscar and Iva (Strobridge) Barker. His loving wife of 70 years, Doris (Kelley) Barker, son Kevin, and daughter-in-law Debbie Barker, granddaughters Lauren (Aaron) Hocin and Kristen (Craig) Morrow, great grandchildren Ariel, Asher and Lola Hocin survive him. Wayne was pre deceased by his parents and sisters, Virginia Lee Grossman and Mary Jane Stewart.
Wayne’s family moved from Martinsburg, WV to Brunswick, MD when he was two years old. He graduated from Brunswick High School in 1946. He worked for Washington Terminal Company until he went into the U. S. Navy during the Korean Conflict, shortly after he and Doris were married. In the Navy, Wayne was assigned to the Jacksonville Naval Air Station in the Early Warning Squadron in 1951. As a “hurricane hunter,” his job for four years was to throw ice into the eye of hurricanes to slow their speed. In 1966, he went to work for the Potomac Electric Power Company in Dickerson, MD as a power plant operator, where he worked until he retired at age 53. After retirement, he and Doris enjoyed living in Port Orange, FL and taking trips to Walt Disney World, Nashville, Biloxi, MS, and Branson, MO.
Wayne loved Craftsman tools, woodworking projects, all types of gadgets, and the latest technology. He was President of the Rotary Club of Brunswick, MD for two years, and a member of the Masonic Lodge for 54 years. He served the Lord as a deacon, trustee, and teacher at various churches throughout his life. At First Baptist Church of Brunswick, Maryland, he led a boys’ group, Royal Ambassadors, teaching them about about missions and taking them on camping trips several times a year. Wayne and Doris were then charter members of Faith Baptist Church near Brunswick which began in the Library of Brunswick High School with 57 committed Christians, including children, which led to the building of a 38,000 sq.ft brick church in Knoxville, MD. Until no longer able to do so due to his health, Wayne served as deacon, trustee, or teacher in every church of which he was a member. Wayne was most recently a member of Forestbrook Baptist Church
