Brett Barron Calvert, Sr. passed away on August 6, 2026, at the age of 62.

A visitation will be held on Monday, August 10, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at McMillan-Small Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Elmwood Cemetery in Columbia, South Carolina.

Brett Barron Calvert, Sr. was born on October 4, 1963, in Charleston, South Carolina, and grew up in Columbia, South Carolina.

He spent his entire career as a golf course project manager, working on courses across the United States with renowned designers like Pete Dye, and overseas in Ireland with Greg Norman. Some of his fondest memories came from his time spent working and traveling in Ireland and Scotland.

He loved traveling the world and was always on the go, always looking for the next adventure. He was a devoted Gamecock football fan, a tradition passed down from his own father, who took him to games as a boy. He continued that tradition with his own sons, taking them to games just as his father had done for him.

He was known for his stubborn streak — the kind that made everyone who knew him laugh, because it was so unmistakably *him*. He loved nothing more than telling a good story, and he had a gift for pulling people in, whether recounting the time he arm-wrestled a stranger at Oktoberfest in Germany or reliving his adventures overseas. He was a natural leader who loved showing others the places he'd discovered — even acting as an unofficial tour guide on family trips to New York, whether anyone needed one or not. He was always hunting for a deal too, memorably trying to buy Sweet Sixteen tickets off a stranger on a New York street corner.

He never missed one of his son Brendon's sporting events growing up. Fiercely independent and proud, he rarely accepted help and always insisted he was fine — even as ALS began to take that independence from him.
He raised his two sons largely on his own for almost their entire lives, giving them everything they needed and more.

In his final years, he was surrounded by remarkable devotion. His son, Brett "Barron" Calvert Jr., served as his caretaker, making profound personal sacrifices to ensure his father received the love and care he deserved. His mother, Patricia ("Moppsy"), cared for him daily at 93 years old — the family believes he would not have lived as long as he did without her.

He is survived by his two sons, Brendon (28) of Fort Worth, Texas, and Brett "Barron" Calvert Jr. (31) of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, who inherited his love of golf, travel, and Gamecock football, as well as his daughter-in-law, Alexis Calvert. He was a devoted grandfather to his two grandsons, Jones (2) and Mills (4 months), whose lives he cherished every moment he could share with them. He is also survived by his mother, Patricia ("Moppsy"), 93, whose daily devotion in his final years gave the family precious extra time with him.

The family wishes to extend special thanks to his home healthcare nurse, Donna Sherman, for her devoted care, as well as to David Truitt, Johnny Bowman, and Joe and Claire Battista — neighbors who also assisted him during his final years.
