Obituary

Bobby Atkinson, Sr, age 84,  passed away peacefully with loved ones around him, on March 14, 2023 at Grand Strand Medical Center after an accidental fall at home. He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Alice Atkinson of Myrtle Beach.
Bobby was born on August 4, 1938 in Hartsville, SC where he was the youngest child of 5.  As he grew up, he loved vacationing at the beach with his family.  Even when he moved away from the area, Myrtle Beach was his "go to" vacation place. So, after living in Joliet, Illinois for many years, he and Alice decided to "retire" to Myrtle Beach ahead of schedule (about 10 years early).  He loved to run track and play church basketball as a young man.  He proudly served in the U.S. Marines from 1957- 1961 as a rifleman and received 2 Good Conduct Medals. Bobby is best known as a Sr Field Engineer for the General Electric Co as well as Siemens Corporation for almost 50 years.  He worked all over the country on turbines and generators in steam and nuclear power plants.  He was very good at his job and was requested by many to work on their equipment.  He also loved telling the stories about his time there.
Bobby was the father of 7 children, Lillis Day (Roger) of Bartlett, TN, Margaret Lisa Tinsley and Bobby Atkinson, Jr , Michael (Jennifer) Atkinson, Preston (Rebeckah) Atkinson all from Columbia, SC and Wesley (Morgan) Atkinson of Florence, SC and daughter in law, Alanna Atkinson, Plainfield, IL.    He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert Atkinson and Ola Dixon and his first wife, Jeralene Goodson and their son, John Gregory Atkinson, as well as brothers Harold, Alvin, Albert Jr "Tater" and one sister, Grace Joyner.
Grandpa leaves 21 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. He idolized his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Though some did not live close to him,  they were all the light of his life and kept him on his toes.  Each one carried a special place in his heart for them.  He also leaves behind his loving puppy Murphy, who will miss sitting with him to nap.
