Bessie Lee Hyman Hathaway, 95, died Thursday, November 19, 2020 at Tidelands Waccamaw Hospital in Murrells Inlet. Born October 31, 1925 in Conway, SC, daughter of the late Julius B. and Ruby Victoria (Jordan) Hyman.
Bess graduated from Aynor High School and the Draughon’s Women’s Business College in Columbia, SC. She was employed at Fort Jackson for a brief period prior to being employed by The SC Employment Security Commission, from which she retired after 42 years of service.
Bess was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Columbia before her retirement and relocation to Myrtle Beach to be near her family and assist with the aid of her mother, Ruby J. Hyman, whose health was failing. She then joined and became active in the First Presbyterian Church of Myrtle Beach, where she was active until her own health failed, curtailing her normal activities and attendance.
Survivors include her sister in law, Mickey Hyman; two grandchildren, Jordan and Wilson Hathaway, both of NC, and their mother, Betsy Hathaway Jones; sister, Betty Jane (Billy) Martin, several nieces & nephews; great nieces & nephews; & great-great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, Scott Wilson Hathaway; her brothers, Donald E. Hyman and William Carl (Oleita) Hyman; sisters, Winnie Ruth (Wayne) Willis, & Lina Mae (Charlie) Hanzly.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, November 23, 2020 at McMillan-Small Funeral Home, with Rev. Dr. John C. Brearley officiating. Burial will follow in Ocean Woods Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.
