Beecher Richard Helms, known affectionately as Dick to his friends, passed away peacefully from natural causes on February 21, 2024, at the age of 80. Born on October 14, 1943, in Gastonia, NC, to Henry Helms and Syble Adams, Dick led a life marked by dedication to his country, love for his family, and a passion for the great outdoors.

Dick's early life in Gastonia laid the foundation for a man of strong character and commitment with a deep sense of duty and service. Dick achieved the rank of Chief Master Sergeant, a testament to his leadership and dedication. His service included tours of duty in the Vietnam Conflict and Operation Desert Storm. Throughout his career, Dick was stationed at various Air Force bases in the United States and had overseas postings in the Philippines and South Korea.

After retiring from the Air Force, Dick continued to serve his fellow veterans as a DAV Veteran Service Officer. In this role, he assisted other veterans and acted as a veteran’s benefits advocate, further demonstrating his lifelong commitment to service and community.

Dick's first marriage to Lee Helms blessed him with three children: David (Stephanie) Helms, Katherine (Kenny) Testa, and Cynthia Helms (deceased), and 2 grandchildren: Joseph Edwards and Jamie Edwards. His second marriage to Janice Helms brought him continued joy and companionship. An avid outdoorsman, Dick cherished the moments he spent hunting and fishing, embracing the tranquility and beauty of nature.

Dick is survived by his loving wife, Janice, his son David, his daughter Katherine, and a legacy of service and love that will forever be remembered by those who knew him. He was predeceased by his first wife, Lee Helms, and his daughter Cynthia Helms.
