Anita Smith Obituary

Anita Louise Smith, 73, passed away on Tuesday, January 9th, 2024. She is
preceded in death by her parents, the late Raymond Summitt and Laura Kelsey,
and her older brother Dan Summitt. She is survived by her loving husband of 52
years, Nathan Smith (Nate), her sister Linda Canull, and many loving family
members: son Chad Smith (Keri) and their children Kingston and Sammy; son
Jason Smith (Amy) and their children Henry and Jack.
Anita was born January 13th, 1950 in Champaign, Illinois. She was a proud
University of Illinois graduate. She married the love of her life, Nathan Smith, on
August 21, 1971. They were joyfully married for 52 wonderful years.
Anita was a partner at Beach Church in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and often
enjoyed spending time with her Bible study friends. She especially loved her time
with her friends in the neighborhood and their bunco games. Anita will be missed
on the sidelines of the many sports games where she was a weekly feature and
active support for her grandsons. She was a lifelong piano player, and frequently
enjoyed playing piano at her home. Anita also enjoyed sewing and making gifts
for her family and friends. Always so kind and considerate to her family and
friends, Anita was a bright light and a gift to the lives of all who knew her.
Anita was a Spanish teacher for middle school children and subsequently for
university age students for over 40 years. Well-deserved time in retirement
shared with her husband gave her the opportunity to travel the world and
embrace those cultures and destinations beloved to her. She and Nate especially
loved cruising with friends and loved ones and island hopping in the
Caribbean. Anita was a lifelong Wheel of Fortune fan, once even winning a show
prize trip to Portugal that she enjoyed with her husband.
Anita is going to be incredibly missed by her family, friends, and all who loved her.
There will be a celebration of life service for Anita, time and place to be
determined. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations (if inclined) in her

honor to Samaritan’s Purse: https://www.samaritanspurse.org/our-
ministry/donate-online/.
