Andrew Harding Obituary

Andrew F. Harding, 77, passed away on January 17, 2024 at his home in

Myrtle Beach, SC, surrounded by his loving wife Julie and family.

Mr. Harding was born on June 3, 1946 to Andrew and Eleanor Harding in New York, NY.

Before retiring to Myrtle Beach in 1997, Drew lived in Lake Carmel, New York, where he raised his family with first wife Pat.

Drew served in the U.S. Army after high school. He later joined the  New York City Fire Department (FDNY),  where he attained the rank of captain before retiring after more than 25 years. In addition, he was a volunteer member of the Lake Carmel Fire Department (NY) and the Horry County Fire Department (SC).

His children have fond memories of the many trips they took in their pop up camper in the 70s and early 80s, including a seven-week cross country trip. When on the road, he would always be chatting to his good buddies on his CB radio.

Drew was a bit of a handyman. He would never think to “call a guy” if he could fix it himself. He even built his own TV with a built-in speakerphone back in the 1980s.  If there was a hobby to be had, Drew likely tried it. He was an avid gardener, and spent many hours biking and sailing. Living in Myrtle Beach, of course he also took a few swings at golf. But when he first moved to the coast, he could most often be found biking along the beach with his dog Fred. His children can recall him often bringing home dogs that he came across while at work with the FDNY. Fred relocated with Drew, but then came beloved Oscar, Buddy, Mama and Mitzi. He had a real love of music. He played the guitar and dabbled with harmonicas. He always had music playing, often Doo Wop, while he relaxed on his balcony, and he and Julie were familiar faces at local karaoke.

He is survived by his wife Julie; children Barbara Patterson (James), Kathy Micale (Nate) and Steve Harding (Melissa); grandchildren Kevin (Allison), Sean and Steven Patterson, Tara and Joseph Micale, and Matthew (Catie), Nicholas, Collin and Tyler Harding; great grandchildren Sawyer and Mackenzie Patterson and Rawson and Theodore Harding; as well as stepsons Shannon Cornell, Brett Cornell (Blake), Kelly Cornell (Chelsea), Clinton Cornell (Michelle) and grandchildren Koy, Jenny, Maddy and Kitty Cornell.

He is predeceased by son Jim Harding and brother Thom Harding.

A celebration of life party (complete with karaoke) to be held in the near future.  In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your local humane society or pet rescue.
