Alton Ben Edwards Jr, known to many as "AB" and to most of us as "Pop." AB passed away peacefully in his home in Windy Hill, North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, on Saturday, April 25th.
AB was born May 27th, 1938, in Lumberton, NC, to Alton B. Edwards and Flora Watson Edwards, and was the seventh of nine children
AB met the love of his life, Faye, while she was still in high school, and they were married on March 28th, 1957, in Charlotte, NC. There, he worked for the United States Postal Service as a mail carrier for twenty-two years.
After retiring to North Myrtle Beach, AB enjoyed the "beach life" of fishing, flounder gigging, and cooking the best fried fish, BBQ, and lima beans for his beloved children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and family. He never met a stranger, always had a story to tell, and could make anyone laugh with his endless supply of jokes.
Aside from his children and grandchildren, he leaves behind a legacy of generosity, knowledge, and Peter Pan peanut butter.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his beautiful wife, Faye M. Edwards, and sons Mark and Michael.
Six sisters, Catherine, Georgie, Helen, Lubert, Nell, Novella, and Baby Brother Jack Edwards.
He is survived by his daughter, Deborah Edwards Petty (Johnny) of Concord, his Son Christopher Edwards (Genni) of Harrisburg, and his daughter-in-law Jennifer Edwards of Fort Mill.
Eight grandchildren: Ben Edwards (Jessica), Angel Faye Edwards, Mark Petty (Ashley), Jennifer Petty (Keshia), Summerlyn Edwards, Rowdy Edwards, Sullivan Edwards, and Lilah Edwards.
Four great-grandchildren, Sonja, Emily Alicia, and Javy Segoviano. Sisters Betty Daniels and Clara Cox. Along with many beloved nieces and nephews.
AB was a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle, and he will be dearly missed.
A celebration of life service will be held on Friday, May 15th, 2026, at Cordelia Park (Indoor Pavilion) at 650 E 24th St, Charlotte, NC 28205, at 12:00 pm with lunch service afterwards.
The family is requesting everyone wear blue and white for a beachy "Salt Life" tribute to AB.
