Daniel Reid Cox

Daniel Reid Cox, 79, passed away Sunday, October 22, 2017 surrounded by his loving family.
“Dan” as he was affectionately known was born in Lyman, South Carolina on January 4, 1938.
Raised in the rolling hills and red clay of Spartanburg, SC, he lived life to the fullest. A true “Rebel,” Dan attended Byrnes High School where he excelled in academics and sports. As a half back for the football team, he scored the first touchdown in the history of Byrnes High School. Dan was a veteran of the armed forces, faithfully and honorably serving his country for 8 years in the US Coast Guard. After graduating from Wofford College with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology, he relocated to Tallahassee, FL and obtained his master’s degree in Psychology as a Florida State Seminole. He settled and raised his beautiful family in Myrtle Beach. Dan was the Assistant Director at Waccamaw Center for Mental Health in Horry and other surrounding counties for 34 years. Upon retirement, he devoted much of his time to one of his greatest passions, Helping Hand, a local crisis intervention program.
A wood worker and craftsman, Dan enjoyed refinishing, refurbishing and bringing old furniture back to life. Writing music, playing guitar and singing karaoke were among his favorite pastimes.   His signature tune was “Mack the Knife!” Dan loved the beach and spent much of his life on and by the water. His loyalty to the FSU Seminoles always came to reckon on Saturdays as he watched and enthusiastically spurred on his team. Over the last years of his life, Dan’s most cherished times were spent with his grandchildren, his son and daughters and their mother, his sister and her family, as well as “palling” around town, eating lunch and working on projects with his best buddy, Harold Tadlock.
Dan was truly a humble soul who exuded a quiet spirit. He will be wholly and sorely missed by everyone who knew and loved him; even those who were blessed to briefly cross his path.
He is survived by the mother of his children, Joyce Cox; children, Melanie Doss (Dave), Stephanie Faidley (John), Shannon Nakano (Kim), and Reid Cox; grandchildren, Madison Doss, Elijah and Anna Cox; sister, Gail Wilson; stepbrother, Donald Fowler as well as many loving cousins, nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life service will be 2:00 PM, Saturday, October 28, 2017 at McMillan-Small Funeral Home with Rev. Tim Holt officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Helping Hand, PO Box 2886, Myrtle Beach, SC 29578 or to Grand Strand Surfrider Foundation at surfridergrandstrand.org.

Please accept my condolences for the passing of your dear loved one. When someone we love dies, the heartache and grief can be great. I hope that you can be comforted knowing that Jehovah God cares for you and sees your pain. (1 Peter 5:7) "He is close to the brokenhearted and He saves those who are crushed in spirit. (Psalm 34:18) May you find comfort and relief during this grievous time, as you cherish the precious memories of Daniel.
