Paul D. Eskew, Jr.
Paul Dalton Eskew Jr. 71, passed away on Wednesday, August 16, 2017, peacefully in Myrtle Beach after suffering a short bout of health issues. Paul was born in Columbia SC in 1946, the son of Sgt .Major Paul Eskew and Sarah Eskew of Fort Jackson SC. Due to his father’s active duty status after World War II, Paul and his mother went to live in Raleigh NC, with distant relatives. Finally residing in Augusta Ga, where he attended school and graduated from Butler High School in Augusta GA in 1965. Upon graduation, Paul enlisted in the U.S. Army and trained at Fort Jackson SC as well, as Fort Bragg NC. Upon satisfactory training he was assigned to the 25th Infantry Division in Vietnam in 1966 and 67. In 1967 he was recruited in as a member of Armed Forces Radio Saigon, as a radio announcer and journalist for Stars and Stripes new agencies. He was awarded a Silver Star for valor in combat as well as a purple heart. Before discharge from the U.S. Army he was stationed at Fort Bragg NC.
As fate would have it, Paul met the love of his life, Ruth Snipes of Goldsboro NC due to obtaining the wrong bus ticket. Instead of making his way to Greensboro NC, he instead by accident went to Goldsboro NC. They were married shortly afterwards in 1968 at St. Paul Methodist Church in Goldsboro NC and after Honorable Discharge from the US Army.
Returning to SC, they initially made their home in Aiken SC, where Paul worked for the local radio station. After a few years, they decided to officially move to Myrtle Beach SC where they made it their home for 51 years. Paul worked for WMYB Myrtle Beach as radio broadcaster for several years, where he was awarded numerous accolades for outstanding service. In 1985, Paul started his own business, Pinecrest Memorial and Mortuary services, at which he retired after 30 years, providing pet burial and cremation services for the greater Myrtle Beach Community. Upon retirement from the Myrtle Beach business community, Paul spent his days helping others and was an active member of Ocean View Baptist Church.
Paul was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Eskew in 2008. He is survived by his Nephew, Alvin Grant of NC, Sister in Law, Helene Snipes and Mr. and Mrs. Frank and Marilyn Bostic of NC, as well as Family friend Jim Cavosie of NC. The family would also wish to include his childhood friend and fellow high school graduate Ernie Wren of Augusta Ga.
A graveside service will be 1:00 PM Friday, August 18, 2017 Ocean Woods Memorial Cemetery with Dr. J. Kirk Lawton, Jr. officiating.
