Donald Glenn Eckrote of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina (formerly of Annandale, Virginia), died peacefully at home on May 5, 2017 surrounded by his children. He was born February 16, 1934 in Long Beach, California, the only child of Donald and Gwyneth (Wootten) Eckrote. He graduated from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1956 with a Bachelor’s of Arts in Slavic Languages. Don then studied German at the Defense Language Institute in Monterrey, CA and served with the US Army in Germany, sparking his lifelong interest in travel and languages. Don married Virginia “Ginny” Marie O’Brien in Salem, Massachusetts on June 30th, 1962

After his 4 years in the Army, Don spent 33 years with the Central Intelligence Agency. He and Ginny retired to Myrtle Beach in 1993.

In Myrtle Beach, Don was an active member of Trinity Church where he was an usher up until his death. He also volunteered for many years with the Myrtle Beach Community Soup Kitchen.

Don’s family and friends will best remember him for his love of travel, music, entertaining and his garden. Don had a great sense of humor and enjoyed spending time with family and friends over a martini or a good glass of wine and a gourmet meal which he often prepared.

Don lost his wife Ginny in 1998. He is survived by his three sons Mark D. Eckrote (Peggy Kemmerly Eckrote) of Suwanee, Georgia, Michael G. Your dad was so comfortable to be around. We have know them since 1977. It was such a pleasure to be around him. He was always smiling as he talked about his recent travels. My deepest sympathies to your family. Betty Laine
