Judith "Judy" A. Gurganus

May 20, 1954 ~ October 9, 2018 A.D.

 Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

"Judy" A. Gurganus, 64, passed away after a courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis and scleroderma on Tuesday, October 9, 2018.  She was born May 20, 1954 in Denton, TX, the youngest child of the late Harold and Dora Nivens. A breast cancer survivor (2012), she was a member of Kingston Presbyterian Church of Conway where she exhibited her kind spirit and strong faith in the Lord who continued to provide her strength to fight every battle she faced.  For most of the past fourteen years, the students, fellow staff and faculty she worked with, at Horry County Schools, were blessed by and a blessing to "Mrs. G."  Always thoughtful and full of compassion for others, she often kept snacks and bottles of water in her vehicle to give to those in need.  In addition to being a light to the community, she let her light shine even brighter at home.  Whether it was through the faithful sharing of a morning or evening devotional, a warm hug, an amazing home-cooked meal, or just a gentle yet radiant smile, Mommy always knew how to brighten the darkest of days.  "...therefore I have hope: Because of the LORD's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.  They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness." - Lamentations 3:21b-23.  Roy Gurganus, of Myrtle Beach, was the former husband and good friend of Judy, and Judy's other survivors includer her four children, a son-in-law, and a daughter-in-law: Lindsey Renee Schirra and husband Robert, of Myrtle Beach; Lori Kai, of Myrtle Beach; Rick Franklin, of Myrtle Beach; Jeff Edward and wife Eminet, of Simsbury, CT.  She is also survived by three grandchildren: Shelby Linn and Lilly Mae, of Myrtle Beach; and Nathanael Philippos, of Simsbury, CT.

The family will receive friends at the McMillan-Small Funeral Home from 4:00-6:00 PM on Friday, October 12, 2018.  Graveside services will be at Ocean Woods Memorial Cemetery at 2:00 PM on Saturday, October 13, 2018.

Please accept my sincere condolence. May you find comfort through the Word of God. “He will actually swallow up death forever, and the Sovereign Lord Jehovah will certainly wipe the tears from all faces…” Isa 25:8. This promise will be accomplished by means of God’s Kingdom or government with His son Jesus Christ ruling as king (Dan 2:44).

Knowing Rick, I know Judy was a woman of deep love, care for the world, and compassion for all in her path. I pray that God's light and love may envelop her and all the family. Much love to each of you.

To Lindsey and family:

I'm very sorry for your loss. The Bible give us comfort that in the future we will see our love ones again. In Job 14:14, 15 it reads:

"If a man dies, can he live again? I will wait all the days of my compulsory service until my relief comes. You will call, and I will answer you. You will long for the work of your hands".

What a beautiful hope! Until we await this promise, please accept my sincere condolences.

I was saddened to read of Judy's passing. She was a great parent, a hard worker, and a good soul. Everyone who crossed her path came away a better person. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this time.

Judy will be remembered for her kindness, goodness, grace, thoughtfulness, and her faith--qualities she imparted to her children, which were the love and joy of her life. Judy was always sensitive and empathetic to others. Her life was well lived, and I am sure she will be missed by everyone she touched as she was a joy. My thoughts and condolences are with her family. I hope that with time the wonderful memories of Judy will help in easing the pain of her tragic loss way too soon.
