Douglass James Hood


On Sunday, September 8, 2019, Douglass James Hood, surrounded by family and friends, passed away. Doug was born on October 17, 1945 in Rochester, New York. He graduated from Shepherdstown University in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, and subsequently spent four years in the United States Air Force. He eventually moved to Myrtle Beach in 1974. He worked as a culinary sous chef at The Library Restaurant and eventually owned and operated his own restaurant, The Bistro, a favorite of locals and tourists.

Doug was well known for his culinary skills at The Bistro, eclectic style, artwork, his rainbow suspenders and answering every Jeopardy question correctly.  In his later years Doug was affectionately known as “Santa” by friends and strangers alike.

Doug was preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth Humphrey Hood and father, James Douglas Hood. He is survived by his partner of 30 years, Cheryl Stephens, brother, Jay Hood (Babs), sisters Anne Estrada (John), Catherine Oliver (Bill) and Julia Hood (James) as well as his loving nieces and nephews.

There will be a Memorial Service on Monday, September 16th at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 65 Crooked Oak Drive, Pawleys Island at 11:00 AM.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Grand Stand Humane Society, 3241 Mr. Joe White Ave., Myrtle Beach, SC 29577 or a charity of your choice. Doug’s farewell to you all, “Have a blessed day!”
