John L. Covington, Jr, loving and devoted husband to Robert J Lukey, loving son to Barbara McCutcheon and also a friend to so many, died on Thursday, January 30, 2020 after a long and courageous battle against scleroderma. Over the years, the disease progressively turned his lungs into scar tissue; he finally succumbed to acute oxygen starvation. While at school in Charleston, John helped run one of the two restaurants they owned: The Cotton Exchange and Queen Street Seafood Inn. John graduated from the MUSC Dental School. He most recently worked at Sexton Dental Clinic in Myrtle Beach where he was the doctor in charge. He retired from Sexton three years ago to spend his remaining years with Robert, his husband of some thirty-six years. After 31 years together, they were officially married in October of 2015. John was born in Kingstree, South Carolina on January 15, 1962. His life was marked by unflinching generosity and kindness to others, all done quietly and without fuss or fanfare. He hated being the center of attention. John and Robert loved to travel, to go to the theater, and to dine in nice restaurants. Together they were benefactors of arts organizations and hospitals in both the United States and in Canada. The Charitable Trust has been set up to last into perpetuity. Make contributions in John’s memory to St Jude’s Children’s Hospital; that was his most beloved charity.

A bittersweet feeling. I am honoured to have known and counted John as a friend. I am deeply saddened by the loss, but so happy that he is now past all the pain and suffering I have seen him go through in the recent times.
Sail away, John, Sail Away!
