Charles Kenneth Cobb

Charles Kenneth “Ken” Cobb, Sr., 88, of Pawleys Island, SC, passed away on January 28, 2019 in Myrtle Beach while being cared for at Embrace Hospice House.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 3:00 p.m, Saturday February 2 at First Baptist Church of Georgetown, SC with the Rev. Dr. Ted Sherrill officiating. The family will receive friends in Myrtle Beach on Friday, February 1, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the home of Tracy and Brian Cobb, 7855 North Ocean Boulevard, and in Georgetown on Saturday following the service, at the home of Lauren and Al Joseph, 933 Willowbank Road.

Ken was born in western Greenville County to the late James H. and Sara A. Cobb on October 13, 1930. He graduated from Parker High in Greenville and served with the US Navy in the South Pacific region during the Korean War. After his military service, he attended Furman University and graduated in 1955. He also earned an MBA from the University of South Carolina in 1978.

He married Ellen Roach on June 7, 1952 in Greenville, SC. In 1959 the family moved to Mullins, SC, where Ken established the first CPA practice in Marion County. He served as president of the SC Association of Certified Public Accountants and on several boards and committees over the years. He also served on the National Board of Accountancy. He was always committed to community service, serving as a deacon in Mullins First Baptist Church and Pawleys Island Baptist, as a charter member of the Mullins Rotary Club, and as an elected school board member and county councilman in Marion County.

Ken loved his family deeply. He loved to travel and take new adventures. He loved Furman Paladin Football and kept the same season ticket seats for 29 years. He was self-effacing, gracious, and polite with all he came in contact. He was a deep believer and strove to be more Christ-like in his daily life. He enjoyed his daily walks and was often seen walking the paths of Brookgreen Gardens, or along the Harborwalk and Front Street in Georgetown. Ken was one of the good guys.

Ken was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Ellen; infant son, Jeffrey; brother, Cecil; and sister, Sara.

He is survived by sons, Ken Cobb, Jr. (Valerie) of Chevy Chase, MD, and Brian Cobb (Tracy), of Myrtle Beach, SC; daughter, Lauren C. Joseph (Al) of Georgetown, SC; sister, Martha Forrest of Travelers Rest, SC; grandchildren, Charlotte Cobb, Joanna C. Adams (George), Sophie Cobb, Kevin Cobb, Steven Cobb (Sara), Elizabeth R. Schroeder (Jason); two great-grandchildren, Cannon Cobb and Brooke Anne Schroeder; "bonus" grandchildren, Christopher Joseph and Thomas Joseph (Katlyn), and many loved nieces, nephews, and friends.

Memorials in memory of Ken may be given to Brookgreen Gardens, PO Box 3368, Pawleys Island, SC  29585 or First Baptist Church, 219 Cleland St., Georgetown, SC  29440.

So sorry to hear your dad passed. Very few of the old guard left. My thoughts go back many years ago when Ken would meet Genair Goodyear at the bank on New Years Day to calculate if we made any money for the year. A different day to be sure. He was a fine man and earned the respect of all who knew him.
