Heike Rosa Maria Cox, 76 of Myrtle Beach, passed away at home surrounded by family on September 6, 2019. The family will greet friends at McMillan-Small funeral home on Friday, September 13, 4:00-5:00 p.m. Following the visitation, there will be a celebration of her life for family and friends at her home.
Heike was born in Prague, Czech Republic on August 27, 1943 and immigrated to the St. Louis, Missouri area as a youth with her family. She attended and graduated from Southwest High School in 1962. While in high school, Heike performed in several musical theater pieces and ran for the track team. After high school, Heike worked as a model and an airline stewardess before becoming a homemaker. While living in Cincinnati, Ohio after the end of her first marriage, Heike met Mr. Robert H. Cox. They married on July 6, 1974 and celebrated their forty-fifth anniversary this summer. She was a dedicated wife, mother, and sister as well as a loving grandmother and aunt.
Heike was passionate about gardening, loved animals, and volunteered her time and resources at various museum gardens and animal shelters wherever she resided. She was equally dedicated to creating a warm home environment filled with love and good food. Heike enjoyed learning about cooking techniques and was an avid collector of recipes and cookbooks. She enjoyed passing her knowledge of recipes for special dishes onto her children. Her grandchildren treasured their Oma’s thoughtful and caring way in the kitchen, and were the recipient of many special home cooked treats. Walking into her home, it is quickly apparent that family was what was most important to Heike. From family photos scattered throughout, to children’s toys for grandkids to play with, to precious items collected over the years; her home is a wonderful reflection of her love for her children and grandchildren.
Heike’s generosity was unending and she was known to be kind and caring towards everyone. She often found herself in long conversations with strangers when she was out and about in town, at the grocery store, a restaurant, or wandering around one of her favorite gardens; Brookgreen Gardens. She had a wonderful way of listening and genuinely caring for what people had to say. Her loving heart instantly put people at ease and brought comfort to all. Heike had a knack for paying attention to the small details in life, whether it was small children, little animals, or delicate flowers hidden under foliage; she noticed, cherished, and liked to talk about the special uniqueness of God’s creations. She was a great encourager as well as an individual who thought of others before herself and she will be dearly missed.
Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Robert Cox, Sr.; her daughter Christina Perkins and son-in-law Anthony Perkins (Laguna Niguel, CA); her son John Renner and daughter-in-law Erin Renner (Johns Island, SC); her son Robert Cox, Jr. and daughter-in-law Valerie Cox (Myrtle Beach, SC); her sister Corliss Schaeffer and brother-in-law George Schaeffer (West Plains, MO); her nine grandchildren: Michael Perkins, Katrina Perkins, Eloise Renner, Lillian Guerrero, Ian Guerrero, Annabelle Cox, Isabelle Cox, Benjamin Cox, and Leo Renner; and her nephew Forrest Schaeffer and niece Melody Schaeffer Zorich.
Heike will be laid to rest at Edgemoor ARP Church Cemetery, Edgemoor¸SC on Saturday, September 14, 2019 at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials may be made to the Edgemoor ARP Church Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 108, Edgemoor, SC 29712.
