James (Jim) Maxwell Davis, 90, of Myrtle Beach, SC died peacefully on Monday, October 9, 2017 at Embrace Hospice House. Born January 15, 1927 in Smyrna, GA. He was the youngest child of the late Grover Warren Davis and Amy Hughs Davis. He grew up among seven siblings – four boys and three girls.

Jim is survived by his blessed wife of 62 years, Margaret (Sue) Huggins Davis of Myrtle Beach; two sons Charles Maxwell Davis and James Timothy Davis; daughter-in-law Blair H. Davis; three grandsons Bowman Davis, Ben Davis, and Tyler Davis of Myrtle Beach.

Jim grew up in Smyrna Georgia and he attended Georgia Institute of Technology for 2½ years, majoring in Civil Engineering. In 1945 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy (during WWII) to become an aviation radar/radio gunner. Upon returning from the Navy he transferred to the University of Georgia where he graduated earning a Bachelor of Business Administration.

Jim was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian faith where he served many years as Elder and Deacon. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Myrtle Beach since 1988. He was an avid outdoorsman. His love of the out-of-doors started early on the small farm in Smyrna. He followed in his dad’s footsteps for many years as a quail hunter and fisherman.

His extensive Boy Scout activities included cave exploring, river canoeing, backpacking the Appalachian Trail and the Rocky Mountains. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He held extensive leadership positions in the Boy Scouts of America. He was a Crew Advisor for two expeditions to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. He was very proud of his two Eagle Scout sons and one Eagle Scout grandson, so far. He was a charter member of the National Eagle Scout Association. He was proud of his wife’s leadership in Cub Scouts with their sons and in the Girl Scouts.

Jim was a former member and leader in many organizations including: Rotary International (Paul Harris Fellow), 32° Scottish Rite Mason, Georgia Appalachian Trail Hiking Club, Field Archery Club, Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday seven year volunteer with the Senior PGA Championship, 27 year volunteer with the World Amateur Championship, and eight year volunteer as Tournament Chairman of the Golf Writers Association of America Tournament, and 40+ year volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America as Scoutmaster, Explorer Advisor, and various district and council positions.

He worked 32 years in Human Resources with Westinghouse Electric Corporation in six different states. He and his wife retired in 1987 to Myrtle Beach, Sue’s home town.

A Celebration of Life and Memorial Service will be held Tuesday October 24, 2017 at 4PM at the First Presbyterian Church in Myrtle Beach on 3810 Robert Grissom Parkway (use entrance from 38th Ave. N.) with Dr. John Brearley officiating.
