Marshall C. Smith
Marshall C. Smith

Marshall C. Smith, 80 passed away Thursday, April 13, 2017 after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.

He was born July 16, 1936 in Athens, GA to the late Coyle Sullivan and Sarah Eades Smith.

As a youth in Athens, he spent many years in scouting, eventually attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. After graduation from the Universality of Georgia with a degree in Landscape Architecture, Marshall entered the United States Air Force as a second lieutenant, serving in various locations worldwide during the early sixties. Marshall later worked towards his Master’s degree and was a faculty member at Penn State University in the department of Architecture Landscape. Over the decades, his career in real estate included stints in building construction and land development. He was a member of the Charlotte Planning Commission and was Vice- President/Loan Underwriter with NCNB in Charlotte before moving to Myrtle Beach in 1986. He held the position of CEO with Burroughs and Collins Company before its merger with Myrtle Beach Farms Company, retiring in 2001 with Burroughs and Chapin Company as Senior Vice-President of Residential and Land Management.

Marshall is survived by his wife, Laura, his sons, Christopher Sullivan Smith (Karen) of Gastonia, NC and Kevin Marshall Smith of Charlotte and his granddaughter, Allie Christine Smith of Gastonia.

The family would like to thank the compassionate staff at Covenant Towers and Dr. Terry Belden who cared for Marshall in his last years.

A private family graveside service will be held in Carlton, GA.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Parkinson’s Association of the Carolinas by going to www.parkinsonassociation.org.

Marshall was a special person and someone I looked up to. We worked on a number of projects together at Burroughs & Chapin. His kindness and teaching meant so much to my career. I feel fortunate to have had him as a mentor.
